ReadingDuring second quarter in Kindergarten our focus continues to be on letter recognition and matching the letters to the sounds they make. More sight words will be introduced,as well as, simple text for fluency purposes. We will continue working on other reading skills such as rhyming words and syllables. We are also in full swing with reading groups and centers. In these small groups we will work on skills geared towards developing independent readers. Reading to and with your child will help them be excited as they take off on the difficult, yet rewarding journey of learning to read!!
WritingWe are still in the beginning stages of writing as we begin second quarter. Students have developed good skills in forming letters and are working hard at putting sounds together to form words and put these words together to form a sentence. We are working very hard on basic CVC words, as well as ending punctuation, word spacing, and writing left to right Kindergarten students are responsible to learn to write 3 different types of writing pieces; opinion, narrative, and informative. Creating good foundational writing skills will foster more success in the different writing genres presented to them throughout the school year. Allow yout student plenty of opportunities to write at home...giving them the freedom to stretch out words independently.

MathIn math second quarter, your student will continue working with the numbers 0-10 and representing them in a number of ways; writing numbers, counting, making the number out of manipulatives, number recognition, using 5 and 10 frames, addition and subtraction. While the main focus is the numbers 0-10, your student will be introduced to a lot of other skills using these numbers. This will help build strong number sense which will create successful math learners! Your student will also be introduced to measurement skills this quarter, comparing the height, length, and weight of different objects. Please watch for occasional math practice sheets to come home in your child's folder so you can see what skills we are working on in the classroom.
